The young, outstanding black Pug Ch. otto of Rydens, an English import, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Thompson of Wheatland Kennels, 2653 Columbia Ave., Lancaster PA. Otto is an outstanding specimen of his breed, and came through to his championship in fine style with three majors, finishing at Chester Valley KC show under judge Florence Gamburg, handled by Daniel Jay.
Lancaster County, in PA, is nationally famous for its plain folk, and its culinary arts. The horse and buggy are truly in existence in this locality, as are also some of the finest farmlands in the USA. Situated, then, in the very midst of these surroundings is Wheatland Kennels, truly "in the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch County." The kennels, comprising a farm just off US 30, have many visitors who are interested in fine Pugs, and who visit the PA Dutch folk festivals, especially during the summer months. Wheatland, the home of James Buchanan, is located several miles from the kennels, hence its name.
Mr. and Mrs. Thompson's entry into the breeding of purebred dogs came about by chance. A well loved pet Pug was killed, and so in the hope of duplicating this beloved pet, an extensive breeding program was launched, and the fever to breed better and better Pugs caught on with the entire family, including two teen-age sons and a daughter. However, it was soon discovered there was no easy way to the breeding of champions, or of learning the many phases involved in it. The final result: a champion Pug could not be obtained merely by the knowledge of good bloodlines and their combinations; practical experience was the major factor needed for the completion of the job.
Otto has gained many friends for the breed, especially for fanciers of the black Pugs. At this time he has sired two fawn champions and one black champion with several promising youngsters now in the ring. Wheatland kennels also has another up and coming young sire to be seen in the ring in the east: Rip Van Wrinkles, who already is the sire of two champions - Wheatland's Most Happy Fella' and Wheatland's Melody, who completed her championship by going BoW at the Pug Dog Club of Maryland Specialty Show, for five points. These are only a few of the fine quality Pugs bred by this kennel. Along with many fellow enthusiasts, Mr. Mrs. Thompson are convinced that Pugs are the most affectionate toward mankind of all the breeds, and warmly invite one and all inquiries concerning them.
